The Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa (PPLAAF) in collaboration with the Whistleblowers,Activist and Journalist Safety International Center (WAJSIC) has concluded a capacity-building workshop for journalists and civil society organizations in Accra, Ghana.
The Five-day workshop equipped participants with
investigative techniques, financial crime reporting, and safety protocols.
Speaking at the opening, Gemma-Mae Hartley, Director of Programs at PPLAAF,
highlighted the organization’s presence in several African countries, including
Senegal and South Africa, and its commitment to supporting whistleblowers and
journalists.
Sonia Rolley, Director of Investigations, emphasized the
critical role of whistleblowers in fighting financial crimes, noting that these
crimes have evolved into complex illicit financial flows that are often
difficult to prosecute. She underscored the link between financial crimes and
government, citing examples of exposés involving illicit financial flows.
Renowned investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas,
Chairman of WAJSIC, shared strategies for conducting investigations, stressing
the importance of protecting sources and whistleblowers. He recounted personal
experiences and highlighted WAJSIC’s comprehensive support for beneficiaries,
including accommodation, psychological, medical, and legal assistance, as well
as monthly stipends.
Anas warned that rising tensions in Africa have increased
threats to journalists and whistleblowers, urging participants to be vigilant.
He emphasized that WAJSIC’s work is made possible by partners like PPLAAF,
which supports whistleblowers and journalists at risk.
The workshop aimed to deepen collaboration among
investigative journalists, CSOs, and enhance reporting on financial crime, and
strengthen mechanisms for whistleblower protection in Africa.
