The Embassy of the Netherlands in Ghana has paid a working visit to the Whistleblowers, Activists and Journalist Safety International Center (WAJSIC) in Accra to gain a deeper understanding of the organization’s work in protecting activists and journalists across the region.

The four-member delegation was given a tour of WAJSIC’s protective facilities, including the Nobert Zong Shelter, the Ahmed Suale Safe House, and the Steve Biko Shelter. During the tour, embassy officials met with residents who shared harrowing accounts of fleeing persecution and violence in their home countries.

The visit was intended to provide the Embassy with first-hand information about WAJSIC’s operations and the tangible impact of its work. The delegation expressed being impressed by the compelling stories of resilience and courage demonstrated by the residents, who continue to receive support and protection through WAJSIC’s shelters.

During a final meeting following the tour, WAJSIC’s Executive Director highlighted the major challenges facing the organization, particularly sustainability and resource constraints. In response, the Netherlands team emphasized the need for WAJSIC to develop a robust sustainability strategy. The Embassy also advised against making residents overly reliant on the shelters, encouraging pathways toward self-sufficiency where possible.

Additionally, the Embassy offered support and strategic guidance, specifically recommending that WAJSIC engage a Human Resource Officer to strengthen its internal human resource management.

The visit has further strengthened ties between WAJSIC and the Netherlands Embassy. Both parties have committed to continuing their collaboration in promoting activist protection and media integrity throughout West Africa.
