At WAJSIC, our mission is to stand beside whistleblowers, journalists, activists, and human rights defenders at risk. Through secure shelter, legal aid, mental health support, and capacity building, we help ensure that the fight for accountability and justice never stops — even in the face of danger.
Confidential safe houses offer immediate protection for journalists, whistleblowers, and activists under threat. A refuge to rest, regroup, and plan next steps safely.
We amplify resident voices and push for stronger protections. Because silence empowers injustice, while awareness challenges it.
Legal support helps residents fight intimidation, wrongful charges, and lawsuits designed to silence them. We make justice accessible, not selective.
We help residents work more safely and effectively through security workshops and skills training, ensuring their mission continues.
Exposing injustice carries hidden emotional wounds. We offer trauma-informed counselling and medical care to help residents heal and stay strong.
Residents receive tools and training to share sensitive information securely. Protection begins with private, trusted channels.
At WAJSIC, our work is shaped by urgent priorities, real-world obstacles, and the measurable difference we make. These three pillars — what we’re focusing on, what we’re overcoming, and what we’ve achieved — define our mission to protect those who speak truth to power across Africa.
Since its founding, WAJSIC has sheltered and supported dozens of courageous individuals, proving that collective protection saves lives and keeps truth alive.
Provided safe shelter, security, and essential support to 39 journalists, whistleblowers, human rights defenders, and dependents across 13 African countries.
Operated 6 safe houses: 5 in Accra and 1 in Kumasi.
Assisted 21 residents just from January 2024 to date.
Breakdown includes:
10 journalists
8 whistleblowers
1 human rights defender/activist
2 journalist & whistleblower combinations
2 journalist & activist combinations
16 dependents (4 wives, 12 children)
Gender and age: 28 males, 11 females, with 27 adults and 12 children.
Offered psychosocial and legal support in 3 active cases to protect residents facing severe threats.
Behind every number is a story of resilience, courage, and hope.
To protect truth-tellers and uphold press freedom, WAJSIC focuses on these key priorities — expanding safe spaces, building partnerships, and empowering those who risk everything to speak out.
1. Fundraising
Actively seeking sustainable funding to maintain operations, expand capacity, and meet the urgent needs of whistleblowers, activists, and journalists across Africa.
2. Shelter Operations
Improving and maintaining safe houses to enhance security, comfort, and intake capacity, so no high-risk truth-teller is turned away.
3. Awareness Creation
Proactively raising awareness of WAJSIC’s services so journalists, activists, and whistleblowers know help is available during crises.
4. Training & Programs
Delivering workshops and targeted training in digital security, ethical reporting, and risk management to empower residents and the wider community.
5. Partnerships
Building strong collaborations with donors, civil society groups, media houses, and legal organizations to amplify impact and strengthen protection.
Despite successes, WAJSIC faces real limitations — from scarce resources to systemic gaps — that we must overcome to keep truth-tellers safe.

These are the voices of journalists, whistleblowers, and activists who found refuge through WAJSIC. Each testimony is a reminder of why our mission matters—and what truth costs in the face of injustice.
“WAJSIC gave me a second chance at life.” When I arrived, I was broken and afraid. They didn’t just shelter me—they believed in me. Today, I’m back to doing the work I love: exposing corruption.

Nigeria
“They took me in when no one else would.” I had risked everything to report the truth. My family was in danger. WAJSIC protected all of us—including my children. I am forever grateful.

Mali
“Their support saved my life.” I came to WAJSIC with only the clothes on my back. They provided legal help, medical care, and above all, dignity. I survived because of them.

Sierra Leone
“We were not just protected—we were empowered.” WAJSIC trained me in digital security and connected me with international allies. I now report with more confidence than ever.
